early life
Marcus Agrippa was born between november and october possibly in 64-62 bce. His familly was not prominent, but he had a brother a sister and a father. He was about the same age as Octavian Augustus, so the two grew up with each other and became close friends. Julius Caesar send him with Octavian to the Appollia with the Macidonian legions while Caesar kept power in Rome.
rise to power
Once Agrippa returned back to Rome, he helped Octavian levy troops. He then made a pact with Marc Atony and Lepidus, that was established as the Second Triumvirate. In 39 or 38 bc, Octavian made Agrippa as governor or Transalpine Gaul. He put down a rising of Aquitanains. He also fought Germanic tribes, becoming the next Roman general to cross the Rhine after Julius Caesar. Octavian summouned him back to Rome to assume the consulship for 37bc. In 36bc, Octavian and Agrippa set of against Sextus. The fleet was very damaged and Agrippa was left in charge of th second attempt. Aggripa had had good victories and destroyed all, but seventeen of Sextus' ships. Agrippa was given unprecendent honorof a naval crown.
legacy
Aggrippa was also known as a writer. He was one of the central people in establishing the Principate system of emporers. His grandson was actually Caligula and his great grandson was Nero (both Roman Emporers)
In your opinion, why should people learn about this person in the future?
i think people should learn about Marcus Agrippa because of all the things he did for the Roman people. i actually sort of think
of Agrippa as a helper or assistant to Octavian or Julius Caesar because alot of the time i read things like "he was sent" or "Octavian told him to" and things like that. This doesn't mean that the things Agrippa did were small and unimportant. It actually makes you thing of questions like "what would have happened if Agrippa had never lived?", or "could other generals do what Agrippa did?" , or "would Rome have been different without him?" This is the sort of thing that really made me interrested in Agrippa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : )
